Andrew Cary Young
Andrew Cary Young established Pearl River Glass Studio in 1975. After graduating that year with a degree in Landscape Architecture from LSU, Young returned home to Mississippi to pursue his original interest in becoming an artist. It was during this period that he began working in the stained glass medium. A demanding craft, it required much from him as he attempted to master its difficult manufacture. It was out of this struggle that Pearl River Glass Studio was born with a mission to establish a “professional studio providing state of the art stained glass in Mississippi.”
Young’s education has been extensive, providing him with a comprehensive vision with which to approach each commission. This education has included study with Ludwig Schaffrath, H. G. Von Stochausen, and other artist teachers such as Pilchuck and Penland, and the master iconographer Vladislav Andrejev. In 1987 he was awarded a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission to see the gothic cathedrals of Europe. These included such prominent cathedrals as York Minister, Canterbury, Chartes, Amiens, Notre Dame, St. Chappelle, and St. Denis. In Germany he visited both Franz Meyer Co. of Munich and Oidtman’s studio in Linnich. He had a personal tour of the Lamberts Glass factory in Waldsassen. Seeing first hand the origins of the craft of stained glass as well as examples of modern practice gave him the confidence to pursue stained glass as a life-long career.
Pearl River Glass Studio, Inc. became an accredited member of the Stained Glass Association of America (SGAA) in 1998 and Andrew Young recently finished his two year term as the association’s president. Through his active participation in the SGAA, Young has been constantly exposed to the current direction of stained glass art work. The studio has responded to the marketplace and has produced a significant body of stained glass artwork for churches and architectural institutions alike.
Pearl River Glass Studio, Inc. maintains a 10,000 sq. ft. facility in Jackson, Mississippi. The studio has been located in the same location since 1975 and Young has the privilege of employing 15 people with the common interest in providing professional service and outstanding quality.
